Part 10 - Open your eyes

Sometimes a child can see things in such a different way that it will absolutely floor you.

My dad tended to fall asleep on the couch a lot especially when he was watching television. You could turn off the TV, but he would wake and say "Hey! I was watching that!" My brother from day one was a very direct individual and would pretty much say what’s on his mind at any particular time. He loved to crawl all over people when they were sleeping too.

So, here's my dad watching TV through closed eyelids, sawing wood, out for the count, taking up couch space and my brother apparently wanted him to wake up and play with him. My mother was in the next room and over heard and saw this happen. My brother was on my dad’s lap, staring at him trying to figure out how to wake the sleeping giant. So, he starts tapping my dad and saying "Daddy, Open your eyes so I can see you." What an amazing grasp of an abstract principle my brother had. The eyes are windows to the soul and he wanted to see my dad's soul. Of course, that was not what he was thinking. He just wanted my dad to wake up and play.

I don't remember if my father actually woke up to play with him. I think he would have had to turn the TV off for that, but it was such a beautiful story and it has gone into the Kehrer legends.
